A couple of weeks ago, my husband interrupted a yoga session I was enjoying in our living room to tell me I had to watch a music video called Earth by an artist name Lil Dicky; I was super annoyed. I stopped stretching, turned to the TV and waited for the juvenile music to start. It took about 4 seconds for the song to warm my heart and make me smile. The video was released to coincide with Earth Day (April 22), so I was a bit behind everyone who saw it when it first came out, but I immediately fell in love with it. I can’t help but want to spread the word about this adorable, beautiful song/ video…here are a few of the reasons why:

It’s laugh out loud funny: Lil Dicky is a musician who can also create decent comedy, which I imagine is a very tricky thing to do. The video’s adorable animation contrasts with his NSFW lyrics in a way that gets me laughing every time I watch.

All the cool cameos: A bunch of celebrities lend their voice to Earth, making it a catchy, quality piece of music. I especially enjoy Ed Sheeran as a koala, Katy Perry as a pony, and Snoop Dogg as a pot plant. See the entire list of the song’s beautiful voices here.

The moving message: While Googling the song, I came across a couple of not so awesome reviews that point mostly to the silliness with which Lil Dicky takes on the serious issue of our planet’s well-being. To be honest, I greatly appreciate anyone who can find a way to tackle the topic of climate change in a novel way. It’s kind of a scary environmental situation we find ourselves in; hearing it talked (or sang) about with some levity is so refreshing. Shout out to Bill Nye and John Oliver, who did just this recently, putting together a super funny, super NSFW climate change segment for Last Week Tonight. Check it out:

Buying the song makes a positive impact: I hate to spoil any aspect of this video, so stop reading if you haven’t yet watched it and want to be surprised; perhaps the most notable celebrity appearance in Earth comes near the end of the video from awesome actor/ passionate environmentalist, Mr. Leonardo DiCaprio. In a Rolling Stone interview, Lil Dicky explains how he was inspired by Dicaprio’s climate change documentary, Before the Flood, and how he hoped all along that he could work with Leo. The Oscar winner’s influence helped motivate Lil Dicky to give the song’s proceeds to a variety of environmental charities. Please visit leonardodicaprio.org to learn about Leo’s climate change efforts, and watch Before the Flood’s trailer below.

Lil Dicky’s Twitter page describes him as a rapper, actor, comedian, model. He seems also to be a guy with a genuine desire to help the planet. His efforts to combat climate change did not stop after Earth was released. His site, welovetheearth.org, contains tons of useful info about climate-related issues and tips for how we can keep our planet thriving and surviving!
